Il Barroccio Nero d’Avola hails from the sun-soaked vineyards around the hilly provinces of Trapani and Agrigento in Sicily's southwestern region. Here, Nero d’Avola grapes thrive on sloping vineyards, where winds weave through the vines, tempering the high temperatures and lending elegance and balance to the wines.

In these remote, rural corners of Italy, the ‘barroccio’—the traditional wine cart—remains a common feature, linking today’s winemaking to its rich past. Il Barroccio embodies the warmth and vibrancy of Sicily, offering a taste as bold as the history behind it.

The name Il Barroccio pays tribute to a traditional chariot-like cart invented in Italy in the mid-19th century. Once used for transporting wine, it remains a nostalgic symbol in many remote Italian villages.

Crafted from Nero d’Avola—Sicily’s signature grape variety—this wine reflects the richness and resilience of its sun-drenched island home.

Winemaking

Il Barroccio is made using traditional vinification methods, with maceration on the skins to extract colour and aromatics under carefully controlled temperatures to retain freshness. After fermentation, the grapes are gently pressed to avoid extracting harsh tannins. The wine then undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation for 20–25 days, contributing to its depth and texture. It is aged for 6 months prior to bottling, allowing flavours to harmonise.

Tasting Notes

Deep in colour and bold in character, this opulent red bursts with ripe dark cherries and juicy plums, supported by layers of warm, earthy spice. The tannins are grippy yet velvety, providing structure while maintaining a smooth mouthfeel. Il Barroccio is a generous, expressive red that captures the heat, heart, and heritage of Sicily.
