Bruno Lafon has built a distinctive body of work in the Languedoc, bringing Burgundian sensibility to the sun-drenched Mediterranean. In Magalas, north of Béziers and the Languedoc coastline, he works a landscape shaped by warm days, dry conditions and the cooling influence of the Mediterranean. The resulting wines combine the generosity of the south with vibrance and drinkability.

Lafon works with both estate and négociant fruit, seeking sites capable of retaining freshness and character, especially important in the region’s warm climate. His approach in the cellar is deliberately restrained, allowing fruit and place to speak clearly. Fermentation and élevage are handled with a light touch, preserving energy, tension and natural expression.

The philosophy is well suited to the Mediterranean character of these wines. Whites are bright, saline and refreshing, with natural acidity and a distinctly coastal feel, while the rosé and reds are juicy, vibrant and effortlessly food-friendly. Lafon neatly captures the generosity of the south, making these wines suited to the Mediterranean table and summer months: seafood, charcuterie, long lunches and bottles shared outdoors.

Lafon’s wines show a gregarious side of the Languedoc: warm-climate wines with freshness at their core, shaped between the hills and the Mediterranean coast. There is a clear Burgundian influence in the precision and restraint, but the personality is all about the vivacity confidence of southern France.

2025 Le Fruit Défendu Piquepoul

Bright, refreshing Piquepoul from Lafon’s Languedoc vineyards. The variety is naturally high in acidity, and here it is presented in an easy-drinking, fruit-forward style. Fresh citrus, white fruit and floral notes give the wine energy, with a clean and saline finish.

Winemaking

The fruit is sourced from organically farmed or sustainably managed vineyards and handled with a focus on preserving the natural freshness of Piquepoul. Gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation keep the wine bright and aromatic, with early bottling helping to retain its lively character.

Tasting Notes

Fresh citrus, green apple and white flowers lead into a crisp, energetic palate. The natural acidity of Piquepoul gives the wine a lively, mouth-watering feel, with a lightly saline finish that keeps things fresh and inviting. An ideal aperitif and a natural match for moules marinières, oysters and grilled fish.

2025 Le Fruit Défendu Rosé

Freshness, fruit and immediate drinkability. A blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah, it has the bright, uncomplicated character that makes southern French rosé so compelling, with plenty of citrus and red-fruit freshness and a dry, balanced finish.

Winemaking

The grapes undergo direct pressing following a short period of skin contact, extracting just enough colour while keeping the wine delicate and fresh. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures, deliberately avoiding excessive chilling to preserve a natural expression of the fruit. The wine is raised in stainless steel and bottled early in January to capture its freshness.

Tasting Notes

Pale and fresh, with bright citrus and delicate red-fruit aromas. The palate is clean, fruity and balanced, with refreshing acidity and a dry, lively finish. Made for drinking young and chilled, this is an easy match for aperitifs, salads, seafood, grilled vegetables and lighter summer dishes.

2025 Le Fruit Défendu Rouge

The wine that started the Le Fruit Défendu story, built around an old parcel of Cinsault that neighbours once suggested pulling out. Lafon saw something special in its fine, expressive fruit, and the wine has become a celebration of varieties and vineyards that might otherwise have been overlooked. The 2025 is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault and focuses firmly on freshness, fruit and easy drinking.

Winemaking

The grapes come from predominantly clay-limestone soils and are handled with minimal extraction to preserve the wine's bright fruit character. Part of the cuvée is fermented in the liquid phase, while the remainder undergoes short maceration of around ten days. The wine is then matured in concrete tanks, keeping the texture supple and the fruit at the forefront.

Tasting Notes

Intense red-fruit aromas lead into a juicy, medium-bodied palate of cherry, raspberry and darker berry fruit, with subtle spice and a fresh, lively finish. The tannins are fine and supple, giving shape without weight. A versatile, uncomplicated red that complements simple Mediterranean cooking.
