Brunello di Montalcino is one of the world’s great expressions of Sangiovese — a region where centuries of tradition, remarkable terroir and patient winemaking combine to create wines of extraordinary character and longevity. Yet among the most celebrated names of the appellation, there remains a unique excitement in discovering a historic estate entering a new period of renaissance.
Castello Tricerchi is exactly that. With its origins dating back to 1441, the medieval castle is among the oldest properties in Montalcino, while the estate has been in the hands of the Squarcia family since 1820. Today, after centuries of history, a new chapter is being written by the family’s latest generation.
At the centre of this evolution is Tommaso Squarcia, who returned to his ancestral estate with the ambition to transform Castello Tricerchi into one of Montalcino’s most compelling traditional voices. Working alongside his family and guided by a deep respect for the land and the history of the property, Tommaso has overseen a remarkable renaissance, moving from a historic estate that once supplied grapes to others into a producer focused on estate-grown, estate-bottled wines of distinction.
The vineyards, 100% Sangiovese Grosso, sit at 290m above sea level in the cool northern reaches of Montalcino, an area renowned for producing Sangiovese of perfume, freshness and elegance. The range spans youthful, vibrant expressions bursting with red cherry fruit and Tuscan rusticity, through to profound, cellar-worthy wines of structure and complexity. The finest selections reveal the true potential of the estate: layered, refined and deeply expressive wines that balance concentration with the hallmark finesse of northern Montalcino.
The philosophy in the vineyard and cellar remains resolutely traditional. Organic farming, meticulous selection, indigenous yeasts, extended maceration and maturation in large Slavonian oak casks allow the wines to speak with clarity and authenticity, favouring elegance, site expression and longevity over fleeting trends.
In a region where many of the great names have been firmly established for decades, Castello Tricerchi represents something genuinely exciting — a sleeping giant awakening. It is a rare combination of six centuries of history, an exceptional terroir and the vision of a new generation determined to restore the estate to its rightful place among the most respected names of Montalcino.
